Guardian Pharmacy of Atlanta harnesses cutting-edge technology to provide personalized medication management and other services to long-term care communities in Georgia.
For Matt Hopp, president and founder of Guardian Pharmacy of Atlanta (guardianpharmacyatlanta.com), his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for long-term care stem from personal experience. After seeing his successful, hardworking grandparents gradually lose their independence as they aged, he recognized “the need for better services for aging and vulnerable populations requiring care.”
After moving to Georgia in 2004 and working for a large corporate pharmacy, he realized the limitations of that model, wanting to provide a more personal experience with individually customized solutions to in-need patients like his grandparents. In 2011, with the support of Guardian Pharmacy Services, one of the largest long-term care pharmacy service companies in the United States, he opened Guardian Pharmacy of Atlanta. The specialty pharmacy supports more than 100 long-term care communities and thousands of residents in metropolitan Atlanta and northern and central Georgia.
The company uses cutting-edge robotic technology to help its pharmacists and pharmacy technicians ensure accurate dispensing and packaging of medications, which couriers deliver same-day—24 hours a day, 365 days a year—eliminating the need for trips to the pharmacy and ensuring residents have uninterrupted access to necessary prescriptions.
“Many people have witnessed a loved one separating their medications into a container according to the day of the week, a complicated task that can lead to confusion, potentially opening the door to a medication error,” says Hopp. “We take this burden away from residents by utilizing smart packaging technology, which separates medications by date and time and replaces the cumbersome mix of containers found in most retail pharmacies, reducing errors.”
Guardian even offers emergency delivery services and holds education and family nights at resident communities, providing informative sessions on topics such as critical topics such as fall prevention and Medicare planning.
The pharmacy also provides expertise and support for staff, with remote access to real-time pharmacy data and customer support, reliable processes and training to minimize errors and reduce compliance risks. It recently built a larger education and training center at its new headquarters to provide in-service and monthly clinical instruction courses for pharmacy employees and community staff members, all to enhance the knowledge and skills of those working in the long-term care industry and leading to more positive resident outcomes and a higher probability of staff retention.
“Overall, our services offer peace of mind for both residents and staff ,” explains Hopp. “Residents can rest assured knowing they have the right medication at the right time and that their day-to-day pharmacy questions will be answered, and community staff members benefit from a trusted, local relationship that provides reliable medication access, efficient processes, on-time deliveries, comprehensive training and a team of experts.”
